About ExoSett

Why are we here?

Too often, the accommodation people need is unavailable, unsuitable, in the wrong place or too difficult to change.

Temporary accommodation becomes effectively permanent. Buildings struggle to adapt as lives and needs change. Useful structures are discarded because the rooms inside no longer suit their purpose. And when accommodation is needed urgently, providing it can take far too long.

ExoSett exists to make buildings more adaptable, allowing useful accommodation to be added, changed, moved or replaced without treating the whole building as disposable.

We asked ourselves if a modular building could be designed so that any accommodation module could be removed without depending on the modules around or beneath it? This led to the idea of an exoskeletal frame in which modules are hosted rather than stacked, then to a wider system intended to let accommodation change while other useful parts of the building remain.

The name ExoSett combines exoskeleton, reflecting the external structural frames, with sett, the name of a badger's home.
